Machine Quilting

My Quilting Style and Charges

All my quilting is free motion. I don’t use a computer, pantographs or stencils. I like to quilt each quilt in a style that is appropriate for the patchwork style and fabric. Please click on the “machine quilting” label on my blog to see quilts I have completed. I am happy to discuss ideas with you. I want you to be delighted with your quilt.

My charges:

My base charge is $6 per square foot for soft edge to edge quilting. I like to Stitch in the ditch on all quilts – unless you request an all over pattern. Stitch in the ditch gives a “sharpness” to the finish of a quilt. If you don’t want me to do this that will of course reduce quilting cost.I like to see a quilt top and mull over some ideas before quoting a price. Between us I'm sure we can find a solution that suit all your needs - creative and budget.

Basting $1-50 per square foot

Backing seams $10 per seam
Minimum charge $75.00

How to prepare your quilt for machine quilting:

Please check that your quilt is square. Have you taken care to measure your borders to fit? Bonnie Hunter has a super tutorial on her blog about attaching borders.

Cut backing at least six inches bigger on all sides than quilt top. If you have seams in your backing please remove selvedges before stitching. Please make the seams 5/8 “wide and press them open. Poly/cotton sheets do not make good quilt backs.

Batting at least 4” bigger on all sides than quilt top.

Please check your quilt for threads. Snip them off - back and front. If you leave threads on the back they may show through on lighter areas of your quilt.

Give your quilt a final good press. Make sure there are no “pleats” in seam lines.

I have a small range of batting, please feel free to contact me regarding your needs. I  don't stock quilt backings, a good source for these is Dot Galloway at Stitchworks Taumarunui.

I have a contact that makes and applies very neat sharp bindings. If you wish you can have your binding made and machined on ready for hand stitching down.

Binding preparation $15

Stitching onto quilt: $2.00 per linear foot

If you choose to have your binding applied you may like to send your quilt label so it can be stitched into a corner when the binding is applied.

  1. Hi,
just wondering if you would recommend a walking foot when machine quilting or if it is just a bit of a waste of money if the 3 layers are well basted?

I love hearing from you - write now!
